Very insightful. I think I will start every PD session with that statement. "This is not magic." It won't always work, it won't be as easy as it seems when there are a room full of educators around nodding their heads in agreement. 26 six year olds is vastly different. Love it. Strength and honor.

It sounds like it was a wonderful experience for a variety of reasons (including the trading of poo stories). It is good to swap stories and be in community with others who understand what it means to be a teacher. I'm glad you got that experience and hope there will be many more like it.

I don't know much about NAPLAN from my vantage point across the pond. Your position seems to be well thought out. Many of these mandated tests are good in theory, we do need accountability at every level. I am working in an environment with 0 accountability and it is not successful. There has to be a happy balance somewhere in here.

I agree, it does suck. It often isn't fun, beats you up and drags you over the coals. But you are getting better. And often you won't know just what a fabulous job you really are doing and the impact that you are making until years later. You will get better, it will get easier and harder. I don't know of any teacher who believes that they have arrived as a teacher. Good teachers are constantly growing and adjusting and changing...when that stops, it is time to get out! For now, you are right where you should be. You are an excellent teacher because you know that there is more to know, more that you want to change and get better at. Remember that you have an A team here ready to jump in and help out with anything!

The beginning is always difficult. You're a better teacher than you were last week, and getting better every week. The things that you express here indicate that you will continue to get better and better. Ask for help. Develop a great PLN on twitter. Reflect. Practice makes perfect :) Tell this wonderful blogging alliance what we can do to help you!

I think you're right Geoff. Application and context are really important parts of any subject. It's difficult though in working through the process of whether the student is ready to be challenged. I'm with ktenkely, aim high. You will also simply need to be ready to put in the safety net for those who need the extra support.

I'm loving hearing your blog on this. You are an inspiration to me (both as a friend, and through my own journey as a teacher to be)!

It is hard as a first year teacher to gauge where the students are. I feel like each year I have taught, I have been able to do more with the kids. I have a better feel for what they can handle and what I can expect of them. I would keep aiming high, they may surprise you yet!

Oh, I can't tell you how I wish there was a ctl+z to undo what I have done in my classroom. Wouldn't that be wonderful. If you figure out how to make that happen, let me know!
